Carolina District Winter Meeting
January 20-22, 2006
The
2005 Carolina District Mid-Winter Meeting hosted by the Wilmington Cape Fear
Rose Society will be held at the Shell Island Oceanfront Suites (www.shellisland.com) Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. Every room (suite) in this property
has a balcony with an ocean view. There
is nothing prettier (except for a rose) than the Atlantic Ocean on a clear
morning in the middle of January. Plan
to come as few days early or stay over a couple of days after the meeting and
enjoy historic Wilmington and North Carolina’s Cape Fear Coast. There is plenty to see and do in the
Wilmington area. Besides the 31 miles
of beaches along the barrier islands Wilmington has a National Register
Historic District, and has diverse
attractions such as the battleship North Carolina, a NC Aquarium, a Civil War
state historic site, and art and specialty museums. For more information
on the area log to www.capefearguide.com the web site on the Cape Fear Coast Convention &
Visitors Bureau.
The
Wilmington Cape Fear Rose Society Will have a hospitality room open during the
weekend where attendees will be able to visit with rosarians from all parts of
the Carolina District. Friday evening will start with a program by Don Myers on
Pesticides. Don is employed by a
supplier of pesticides used in agriculture, turf and horticultural industries.
After Don’s program the District Council will meet to discuss matters of
interest to the district and make recommendations to the Board of Directors.
Saturday
is packed with informative programs. There will be periods devoted to
Mini-Flora Roses, Earthkind Roses, and Shrubs, Polyanthas & OGR’s. A panel will discuss their fertilization
programs. A successful horticultural
exhibitor will share his bag of tricks.
An arranger has put together a program called Arrangements 101. The 2006
edition Sandy’s Picks which covers all classes of new roses will again be
presented. A hybridizer will review the
process that is required to bring a new variety to market. He will also have some slides of unnamed
seedlings so we can get a feel for what one hybridizer has in the
pipeline. There will be vendors booths
open during the day where you may be
able to satisfy some of your rose needs (plants & equipment) for the
upcoming season.
The
Saturday night banquet will be followed by the presentation of the District
Silver Honor Medal, the Outstanding
Judges Award, and the Outstanding Consulting Rosarian Award.
