RULES FOR HORTICULTURE
1.
ENTRIES. Entries will be accepted
between 6:30 am to 10:00 am on Saturday, June 7, 2003. Exhibits not on the correct placement table
(miniature or non-miniature) by 10:00 a.m. will not be judged. Judging begins at 10:30 am.
2.
EXHIBITOR
RESTRICTIONS. All rose growers may
exhibit blooms grown out-of-doors in their own gardens. No more that one person or one couple may
exhibit from the same garden.
Membership in a rose society is required only in Sections A and B.
3.
REGISTRATION. All exhibitors must
register. The exhibitor’s number will
be entered on page one of this schedule and must appear on all entry tags.
4.
ENTRY PROCEDURES.
Ø Winston-Salem Rose Society
members will give entry assistance upon request. The exhibitor must know the rose name.
Ø
Official
ARS entry tags must be used and filled out completely for all classes.
Ø
All
containers will be furnished except for Class 40. English boxes for Class 39, bowls for Classes 27 & 38, and
picture frames for classes 42 $ 43 will be supplied on a first-come basis.
Ø
Except
where prohibited, more than one entry per class per exhibitor will be permitted
provided the varieties are different.
Except for Class 16, entries are restricted to one per exhibitor per
class for Sections A and B.
Ø
Inconspicuous
wedges are permitted
5.
PLACEMENT CONDITIONS. The
placement of all entries will be made by, or at the direction of, the Placement
Committee. Exhibitors may place entries
for Classes 27 and 38. Height from
table to top of specimen must not exceed 28 inches. Stems must be in the container at least
three inches, except for miniature/miniflora roses.
6.
JUDGING
GUIDELINES.
a.
Rose varieties exhibited must be registered with the ARS. Official listings may be found in Modern
Roses XI (and Supplements), Handbook for Selecting Roses, ARS
Annual, and American Rose Magazine.
b.
Judging will be in accordance with the rules of the ARS and is based on
the ARS point system:
1.
Form 25%
2.
Substance 15%
3.
Color 20%
4.
Stem & Foliage 20%
5.
Size 10%
6.
Balance & Proportion 10%
c.
The judges will DISQUALIFY a specimen for any of the following reasons:
1.
Misnamed, mis-classed, unlabeled, or mislabeled.
2.
Stem on stem (Old Garden Roses may be shown with one stem-on-stem)
3.
Foreign substance.
4.
Not dis-budded.
5.
Violation of ARS or local show rules.
6.
Not registered with the ARS
d.
Judges may make or withhold awards, including ribbons, dependent upon
the exhibit’s merit. Decisions of the
judges are final.
Any questions on interpretation of these rules or of
this Rose Show schedule will be ruled on by the Show Chairman, Co-Chairman, or
Chairman of Judges.
7.
ALPHABETICAL
PLACEMENT AND JUDGING. In all Sections
except A, entries in all classes (except where not practical, e.g., English
boxes) are placed and judged alphabetically.
The entries are placed on the exhibit table in alphabetical order
according to the variety. One or more
roses of the same variety constitute a sub-class, which is judged on its own
merits. EXAMPLE: in Class 17, there
might be sub-classes under “A” for Allspice, American Pride, Artistry, etc.
8.
EXHIBITS
OF MERIT MAY WIN:
a.
Ribbons
– blue, red, yellow, or white – may be awarded to entries in each class or
alphabetical sub-class.
b.
Perpetual
Trophies – Sections A and B, will be engraved with the winner’s name and year
of award. Only blue ribbon specimens
can win. Keeper awards will be given.
c.
Awards
are conferred on the best, blue ribbon entry in each class, except 17, 19, 33
and 35 (from which the royalty awards are selected).
d. Distribution: 2003 NOTE: Awards must be claimed between 4:00 and 4:30 PM on Saturday, June 7. Winners who cannot be present must give a written release to the person who will pick up their awards; awards will not be mailed. Ribbons cannot be claimed at the end of the show; they will be mailed if request at registration. Upon entry. all roses become the property of the Winston-Salem Rose Society.
All entries become the property of the Show Committee. Any entry which becomes wilted or unattractive may be removed by the Committee.
Awards
are given to the QUEEN, KING, PRINCESS and QUEEN’S COURT OF HONOR, which are
selected from the blue ribbon winners of Section C, Class 17 & Section E,
Class 31.
Ø
The
Queen of the Show, the best specimen, receives the ARS Gold Medal Certificate.
Ø
The
King of the Show, the second best specimen, receives the ARS Silver Medal
Certificate.
Ø
The
Princess of the Show, the third best specimen, receives the ARS Bronze Medal
Certificate.
Ø
The
Queen’s Court of Honor awards are for the fourth through the ninth best
specimens.
Ø
The
Prince of the Show is the best blue ribbon winner from Class 19.
Awards
are given to the MINIATURE QUEEN, KING, PRINCESS and QUEEN’S COURT OF HONOR,
which are selected from the blue ribbon winners of Section E, Class 32 &
Section F, Class 33.
Ø
The
Miniature Queen of the Show, the best mini/miniflora specimen, receives the ARS
Gold Medal Certificate.
Ø
The
Miniature King of the Show, the second best mini/miniflora specimen, receives
the ARS Silver Medal Certificate.
Ø
The
Miniature Princess of the Show, the third best mini/miniflora specimen,
receives the ARS Bronze Medal Certificate.
Ø
The
Miniature Queen’s Court of Honor awards are for the fourth through the ninth
best mini/miniflora specimens.
Ø The Miniature Prince of the Show is the best blue ribbon winner from Class 35.
The
DOWAGER QUEEN is selected from Class 22.
The
VICTORIAN ROSE is selected from Class 23.
The GENESIS AWARD is selected from Class 24.
The
Sweepstakes Award will be given to the exhibitor winning the most blue ribbons
in Section C. In case of a tie, red and
yellow ribbons will be counted.
The
Mini-Sweepstakes Award will be given to the exhibitor winning the most blue
ribbons in Section F. In case of a tie,
red and yellow ribbons will be counted.
The
ROBERT N. HANES TROPHY will be awarded to the Winston-Salem Rose Society member
winning the most ribbons in the entire horticulture section of the Show. A keeper award will be given.
